The Hidden Cultural Impact of Workplace Conflict

Tuesday, February 25, 2014 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. CST

Conflict impacts nearly every aspect of workplace communication. The cultural impact of conflict is often hidden although it affects how cultural groups are perceived, how people manage intercultural conflict, and their investment in the organizational culture. While Americans may be predisposed to certain conflict styles, members of other cultural groups may not share these predispositions. Cultural difference in conflict management styles can be high risk for business outcomes and, thus, costly for all involved. Often the full diversity of cultures that can be represented within an organization are only visible to diversity and inclusion representatives themselves. Even within the United States, however, cultural norms for conflict negotiation can vary based on gender, class, race, immigration status, first language, and an innumerable array of cultural group categories. This presentation will aid professionals to more easily navigate conflict in any work environment by raising awareness of cultural differences without resorting to stereotypes. Attendees will learn about cognitive biases, cultural behavioral differences, conflict management styles, and productive problem solving that diffuses frustration whether at the lowest or highest levels of the organization.
