The Florida Diversity Council, in conjunction with Grow Financial Federal Credit Union and FordHarrison LLP, hosted its 8th Annual Tampa Bay Young Women’s Leadership Symposium on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Epicurean Hotel in Tampa, FL. The purpose of this event is to promote the development of Tampa Bay’s future women leaders by giving them rare access to influential businesswomen and inspirational, motivational speakers.
Young women between the ages of 14 and 18 participated in the half-day event, which focused on leadership development, personal branding, and career/college planning. Each young woman interacted in a small group setting with a female executive mentor from an elite organization in the Tampa Bay area. Together with their table mentors, attendees had the opportunity to network and ask questions about future business and academic ventures, as well as work through important life and leadership-building exercises.
The Symposium began with Keynote Speaker Bemetra Simmons, Hillsborough Market President for BB&T Bank, sharing her insights and experiences on building a personal brand and excelling in the corporate world on her terms. A Mentor/Student Roundtable session followed enabling attendees to discuss themes from the Keynote Address with their mentors and how to apply these themes to their career plans. Workshop Speaker Cynthia Bacheller, M.Ed., CDC, “The College Success Coach,” spoke on Choosing Your College Match, which gave participants tools to help identify the type of higher education that would most closely align with their goals. To conclude the event, workshop speaker Robyn Sayles, Founder of Creative Catapult Consulting, LLC, led an activity to Know Your Value, during which she challenged attendees to identify their skills and weaknesses and to recognize their individual strengths.
FIS served as the Title Sponsor for the Young Women’s Leadership Symposium for the third year running. Additional sponsors included UnitedHealthcare, Bright House Networks, Aon Hewitt, UNUM, Cigna, Saint Leo University, Humana, Nova Southeastern University, MetLife, and Geiger.
